The Celluma Difference

Why Celluma is the best and most trusted professional grade LED light therapy on the planet. BioPhotas, manufacturer of the Celluma Class II medical device, is registered with the FDA and certified to ISO standards. Celluma is also CE-marked as a Class IIa medical device in Europe—the first device of its kind to achieve this designation.

Celluma Compared to other LED Devices

We believe most LED devices sold on eBay, Amazon and many more outlets are imports from undisclosed origins with no industry standard credentials, meaning they have not been reviewed by the FDA, TUV, UL, CE, ISO or any other agency that regulates the manufacture of medical devices for safety and efficacy. One serious red flag is that they are available under different names all over the internet as well on eBay, Amazon and many more outlets. The price range is from approx. $150-$320. In addition, they may purport to use green and yellow, or amber wavelengths which have no basis for treating skin conditions in scientific research.

As the manufacturer of Celluma, a Class II medical device, BioPhotas is registered and regulated by the FDA, ISO (International Standards Organization) and many other regulatory agencies. Celluma is also medially CE-Marked as a Class IIa device in Europe, and is the first device of its kind to receive this status. We cannot compare a medical device like Celluma to this kind contrivance and we would advise anyone who is considering purchasing this machine to be forewarned as it is certainly not proven to do anything. There are well-understood and proven parameters that affect the efficacy of a light therapy device, and no other device on the market meets these parameters like Celluma.

Effective light energy is dependent upon how much energy the cells absorb over the treatment time.

Recognizing that the key to light therapy efficacy is not “power output”, but “energy absorption”, the internationally patented “flexible and shape-taking” characteristic of the Celluma allows it to deliver a comparable or superior dose of light energy using a less powerful, and therefore less expensive, product design. Or said another way; it’s not the power emitted by the device that matters, it’s the dose available for absorption that matters. Dose diminishes as power travels across distance (Inverse Square Law). This is not just a marketing claim. We proved it with peer-reviewed and published clinical research conducted at the prestigious Beckman Laser Institute at the University of California.

Celluma uses 3 Powerful wavelengths simultaneously in each of its 3 programs to upregulate a variety of compromised cells at different tissue depths. This is why Celluma is effective for so many different types of conditions. No other LED panel has this capability. Additionally, Celluma is shapeable. This patented design feature allows the device to flex and be placed close or directly on the skin which GREATLY enhances the ability of the under-functioning cells to absorb the light energy. This gives faster and better results and is key to Celluma’s effectiveness and excellent outcomes.

Device Information & Tips

The 1st setting is Acne: This is the blue dominant program and is anti-bacterial. Blue is the least penetrating of all three wavelengths. In the Acne setting there is also lots of red and a little infrared being emitted. These 3 wavelengths work synergistically to enhance outcomes. The red increases micro-circulation to bring more oxygen and nutrients to the area for healthier skin and tissue repair. The red also reduces the redness and inflammation associated with the acne lesions. Red enhances immune and lymphatic response for better drainage/removal of dead cells and toxins from the area. Keratinocytes also respond well to the red wavelength and are responsible for skin tone and firmness.

The 2nd setting is Wrinkles: The Red dominant program, called Wrinkles is the USA/Canada and Red Light outside USA/Canada. This is the wrinkle/anti-aging program and may be used for everything other than Acne or Pain. So, when in doubt use this program. It is the only program with almost equal emission of each of the 3 wavelengths. Use it for all skin related conditions. It is ideal for use following laser, microdermabrasion, microneedling, peels, and injections. Also, ideal for use following surgery and deep ablative procedures. Many different cells respond really well to Red and Infrared. See additional information below.

The 3rd setting is Aches & Pain: This is near-infrared dominant and is the deepest penetrating setting. Use this for all pain, joint, muscle issues. This is an anti-inflammatory setting and is excellent for increasing micro-circulation, angiogenesis and neurogenesis. This is a great setting for supporting any condition located deeper in the tissue, such as post-surgical incisions.

In reviewing the clinical research on phototherapy there are several keys to optimizing the efficacy of a LED device:

1. Wave Length – The Celluma PRO has a total of 345 diodes. Approximately (115) light emitting diodes that emit energy in each of the Blue (465 nm), Red (640 nm) and Infrared or IR (880 nm) portion of the light spectrum. There are several devices that do this, but they typically cost 5 to 20 times as much as the Celluma and are large rigid flat panel light arrays which cannot conform to the body.

2. Power Output – Again, this is the standard by which the FDA compares light energy devices such as the Celluma. The Celluma delivers between 2 and 10 J/cm2 over the course of a 30 minute treatment time. These numbers vary a little depending on which Mode of treatment is selected on the Celluma. This translates into a total dose of approximately 3,500 to 6,100 Joules for the Celluma LITE and approximately 5,200 and 9,000 Joules for the Celluma PRO. This amount of energy delivery is intentionally lower than the devices mentioned above for the reasons explained below.

3. Delivery Distance – LED light energy is most effectively absorbed by the body when it is emitted at or very near the surface of the skin. In fact, as light emission is move away from the skin, the body’s ability to absorb the discreet wavelengths of energy decreases dramatically to the point that about 2 to 3” away from the skin, absorption is negligible. This means that despite the amount of energy being emitted by the device, the body only absorbs the energy if emitted very close to the body. The key feature that differentiates the Celluma from all other light energy devices is its formability and shape-taking characteristics. The Celluma can be formed to any size of patient or area of treatment to ensure the optimal absorption of the energy being emitted by the device. In contrast, LED devices with rigid flat panel light arrays do not conform to the area of treatment, emitting energy inches from the body and minimizing the amount of energy the body actually absorbs. This is why the Celluma is a more effective device, even when it delivers lower amounts of energy.

4. Energy Delivery – The scientific research bares out that cells are much more efficient in absorbing light energy when that energy is delivered over a longer period of time and when the light is delivered in pulses rather than a constant stream of light. Again, this is where the Celluma is differentiated from the other devices on the market. The Celluma uses very complex electronic algorithms to modulate the light energy to ensure optimal cellular absorption. The Celluma’s treatment times are also intentionally longer in duration to ensure optimal cellular absorption. Competing LED devices use higher levels of energy emission and shorter treatment times, claiming to be more efficient in energy delivery. The truth of the matter is that “slower and lower” is better. Too much energy delivered too fast just results in the non-absorption of the energy and a diminished therapeutic benefit.

Celluma Versatility

Patented, pulsed-wave technology controlled by proprietary software algorithms power Celluma Light Therapy for an array of therapeutic applications. All our devices are polychromatic and safely deliver blue (465nm), red (640nm) and infrared (880nm) light energy simultaneously for skin conditions, pain management, hair growth, and body contouring easily and affordably, both in a professional setting and at home.

Each wavelength is absorbed by different molecules that act as a signaling mechanism for different cellular processes. For example, some reduce inflammation and some kill acne-causing bacteria, while others enhance localized circulation. With more than a dozen models to choose from, whether you are seeking a solution to aging skin, acne breakouts, pain, hair loss, or body slimming, there is a Celluma model to address your concerns and budget. All Celluma models address 2 or more conditions in a single device so be sure to choose the model that best suits your needs.

The Science of Light Energy

Patented Shape-Taking Design

The distance between the light source and treatment area is critical for successful outcomes.

Human bodies are not flat. Thus, maintaining a consistent proximity between the body and the light source is crucial in delivering the optimal dose of light energy to our cells. Which is why we designed and patented our award-winning, flexible, shape-taking technology that allows anyone to contour Celluma LED panels as close as possible to the skin for getting just the right dose of uniform light energy for safe, effective results.

How It Works

  1. STEP 1

    Emitting Light Energy

Light therapy emits particles of light called photons.

  2. STEP 2

    Absorption and Conversion to Energy

These photons are absorbed by photoreceptors in the mitochondria of our cells, converting light into cellular energy (ATP).

  3. STEP 3

    Cellular Response

Increased ATP boosts protein and enzyme production, promoting cell repair and regeneration.

Frequently Asked Questions

WE KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO ASK

Are there any direct benefits of LED Light Therapy for hyperpigmentation?

There is actually very little research on using LED therapy for hyperpigmentation but the available research points to red and near-infrared being beneficial. Here’s how it apparently works according to one study*: Near-infrared… “significantly reduced melanin production and tyrosinase expression, not only in a normal human melanocyte monoculture both with and without forskolin stimulation but also in a three-dimensional multiple cell type culture. It reduced melanin content via inactivation of the apoptosis signal-regulating kinase and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 pathways. The level of phosphorylated cyclic AMP response element-binding protein was also decreased by LED irradiation. Moreover, LED irradiation reduced melanogenesis through decreased expression of tyrosinase family genes (tyrosinase-related protein-1 and 2, and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor). These results indicate that LEDs could potentially be used to treat melanin-overproducing skin conditions.”* Light-emitting Diodes at 830 and 850 nm Inhibit Melanin Synthesis In vitro Jeong Mo Kim, Nan-Hyung Kim, Yu Shun Tian and Ai-Young Lee Dongguk University Research Institute of Biotechnology Medical Science Research Center, and Department of Dermatology, Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.

Can I remove the stands on the ELITE?

The ELITE S2 features 5 separate FDA-cleared treatment modes addressing ageing skin, body contouring, hair growth, acne, and pain. Unlike other devices, the ELITE S2 is stand mounted and features a rolling base.

Can I use the Ageing mode on the Celluma PRO to restore hair?

The Hair mode found on the RESTORE, NOVA, ELITE, and CONTOUR PLUS are the only Celluma devices that are specifically designed for Hair Restoration and this is the only program that can claim FDA-clearance for this indication. Our before and after images are based on results using the Celluma RESTORE and the Celluma RESTORE protocol. The Wrinkle/Red Light program on other Celluma devices is NOT the same - even with the pulsing off. It is a different algorithm, emitting a different level of energy. Additionally, the Celluma RESTORE and the NOVA are smaller devices than the Celluma PRO and fits perfectly over the head.

Contour Mode - How long does the effect last?

Everybody is different, so results and treatment duration vary from person to person. The official protocol is 3x per week for 4 weeks. Most users report results after just one treatment, and you may need to continue to use the Contour mode regularly to maintain results.

Does Celluma treat eczema?

Neither Celluma, nor any other LED device, is FDA-cleared for the treatment of eczema, so there are no protocols in place, and we make no claims for treating this condition (protocols-for-use are derived from clinical trials). Not a lot of research has been conducted using LEDs to treat eczema, so the information available is mostly anecdotal. The wavelengths used in Celluma are strictly therapeutic and red and infrared are great at decreasing inflammation. They also increase micro-circulation and cause vasodilation which can result in healthier tissue as it brings more oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood into the area.

Does Celluma treat psoriasis?

Celluma is not FDA-cleared for the treatment of psoriasis, there are no protocols in place (protocols-for-use are derived from clinical trials). The truth is that not much study has been conducted using LEDs to treat psoriasis so all the information available is mostly anecdotal. The wavelengths used in Celluma are strictly therapeutic and red and infrared are great at decreasing inflammation. They are also going to increase micro-circulation and vasodilation which usually results in healthier tissue as it brings more oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood into the area.

Does Celluma treat rosacea?

As Celluma, or any other LED device, is not FDA-cleared for the treatment of rosacea, there are no protocols in place (protocols-for-use are derived from clinical trials). The truth is that not much study has been conducted using LEDs to treat rosacea so all the information available is mostly anecdotal. The wavelengths used in Celluma are strictly therapeutic and red and infrared are great at decreasing inflammation. They are also going to increase micro-circulation and vasodilation which usually results in healthier tissue as it brings more oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood into the area. The blue in the Acne and red-light (Wrinkle) programs will be antibacterial and help reduce any lesions and pimples. Many LED device users are confused about using infrared as they think that the infrared is heat producing when, in fact, it is not. The infrared wavelength used in Celluma increases mitochondrial function in compromised tissue located in the dermal and subcutaneous layer of the skin. It is not thermal in nature, so no heat is produced by the infrared wavelengths. However, with Celluma, the resistors on the circuit board produce a little warmth which may produce a temporary pinkish complexion, and this may not be desirable with a rosacea client however temporary.

Does the ELITE have the same lights as the RESTORE for hair growth?

Yes. The new ELITE S2 is the first 5-mode device FDA-cleared for body contouring, hair restoration, acne, ageing skin, and pain. The ELITE S2 features a modular design, powering up to three LED panels, offering three times the coverage during a single treatment. It also includes interchangeable large and small accessory panels for location-specific body applications.

Does the FACE / HOME / RESTORE / LITE / NOVA have the same power as the PRO?

All of Celluma's devices have the same light energy output per square cm and the same effectiveness per treatment mode. The PRO is a larger device, covering more surface area of the skin, and thus has more LED's than the standard sized HOME/FACE/RESTORE/LITE/NOVA. For example, using the WRINKLES treatment, the PRO and the FACE/HOME/RESTORE/LITE/NOVA deliver the same light energy output.

Does the LITE have the same power as the PRO?

All Celluma's devices have the same light energy output per square centimetre and the same effectiveness per treatment mode. The PRO is a larger device, covering more surface area of the skin, and thus has more LED's than the standard-sized LITE. For example, using the WRINKLES program, the PRO and the LITE emit the same light energy output per cm².
